Red to the White to the Blue

DisarmNYPD posted on Tuesday that they were going to burn the U.S. and Confederate flags in Fort Greene Park. On Wednesday a lot of people arrived to make sure that wouldn't happen. It's not illegal, and the point they are making is valid, but there are a lot of people that are sure this wasn't going to happen. Fire extinguishers, water guns, and hammers were brought to stop those that thought they could. I'm okay with the first two, but the hammers in the back pockets were a bit unnerving. Thankfully all ended mostly peaceful, could have gone awry quickly. Cheers to fighting for others rights, cheers to defending Old Glory. Cheers to freedom.

To the Red, White and those that feel Blue...

I never set out to photograph flags I just happen upon them, and these today, fitting on the 4th. Faded glory. A day of celebration for most, for others, a thorn in their side. I like to celebrate what we have... now. So here's to those stars and stripes and all that exploding madness out my window... Happy Birthday America!

I've moved this image around my desktop for 2 years. I'm not sure why I never filed it, nor why I hadn't posted it, but yesterday's weather had me dreaming of riding again so today's the day. It's one of my favorite places from my bike rides around Brooklyn. The ride that takes me up Myrtle to Marcy and a quick right, there they are. Always busy. Always smiling. Along with all of their signs hangs many photographs by other photographers, let's just say it's a well photographed tire shop. For me it's security, the roads of Brooklyn are torture on a bike tire and it's nice to know I can get a quick fix and be on my way.

Red to the White and the Blue

Flag day has passed. Fourth of July long over. Memorial day, forgotten - and yet, flags pop up everywhere. The Brooklyn Flea is big on flags and I do love the graphic nature of a flag - photo, photo, photo! The wall is from a 9/11 memorial mural in Brooklyn that I just had to stop and photograph. A huge wall, 3 photos wide, that sits amongst the most festive, flag waving section of Brooklyn I've ever rode through. I like the flag, but it makes me nervous when every house, on every block after block, has one out front and even more in the trees. Land of the free, home of the brave...

Memorial Day.

Flags from the year before. Tossed aside by wind and time but still there to remind us all of the lives lost.

Meeting more of the history in the hood. Jack and his brother have run this appliance repair shop on Myrtle for a long time, to say the least. Their tagline says it all, "house of a million parts". There are also flags and memories on all walls. Minutes later the scrapbooks were out, pictures of him as a kid, the Veterans Memorial downtown, the neighborhood, friends, etc. I stopped to capture a flag and in return got a history lesson. Smile. If you ever need a small flag, yes, he's got those too, just a buck!

I thought I was getting a "no pictures" wave, but it turned out to be a "come in!" wave. I've walked by this place a few times a year but never had a camera. With flag on the brain, I stopped and was treated to a full tour. Just what you'd think inside - a place for socialization, a big back room full of tables for events, and lots of flags. I think I'll take them up on their offer to come back anytime.
