Santiago de Iguape

This was, by far, my favorite Carnival celebration of our trip. Not much of anything compared to Salvador or Rio, or even Maragogipe, but I loved it. As we had a little siesta after lunch kids started converging into the community building next to our car. They arrived in shorts and flip flops carrying their costumes in their backpacks, secrecy of who is who is integral. Once ready, everyone emerged in costumes made of bed sheets, wearing rubber boots and masks... which pretty much looked like escaped laundry to me. ha! In 90+ degree heat, it had to have been torture but they were having so much fun running through the streets haunting away the evil spirits - I was sweating just keeping up with them. As we wandered back towards the car we notice a couple of costumes in a corner bar so we had to stop in... you know, for the costumes. I have to say, these are some of the most friendly people of anywhere I've traveled. Here we are, a pack of worn out photographers/tourists following kids through town photographing them and the first thing people do is offer us beer! So of course we had some... and some laughs and photographed some more. It's all so wonderful and it's hard to believe it's been a month already. How did that happen?

Here's the owner - at 80 years old - showing off his skillz!

Round 2.

Carnaval from the beach, I think this might be the best place to watch!

After yesterday's full day of Carnaval I didn't think I would find myself in the middle of the madness again today. I met up with a friend from NYC and as we made our way back to her friends car we arrived in Campo Grande just as Ivete Sangalo's truck turned up the music (http://www.ivetesangalo.com/carnaval2012). Everyone here in Salvador loves her so the crowds were massive. We sang and danced along then struggled to make our way out, pushed and shoved while slammed up against every other sweaty person around. I would describe Salvador's Carnaval like this: take every fun parade you know of in NYC - West Indian Day, Halloween, Gay Pride and Mermaid - mash them into one with a splash of religion, turn the speakers up, add an excessive amount of beer, hot sun and happiness - tada, Carnaval! I don't think this would ever work in NYC, we are far too reactive, but it's all happiness here in Salvador. And with that HOT sun comes a suntan… eventually. The SPF 70 I brought from the states hasn't held a chance against this sun, no matter how often I apply I'm red all over with crazy blisters on my feet so instead of bouncing along tonight, I'm going to take it in from this balcony overlooking the road. Tomorrow is a long day of traveling to escape to paradise, Boipeda Island!!!!

Carnaval

With just 4 hours of sleep I pulled myself together and we ran out to celebrate Carnaval! How could I not - I'm here and it's happening now... now... and now, and still, now. It's 11pm and this party is just getting started. Out the window a monster truck just rolled by with the Afromen atop as a continuous stream of revelers walk down the street to get to the biggest party of Salvador - Barra Circuit! Carnaval starts early and pretty much goes until just before early, non-stop for 7 days. An entire city filled with 3-for-5r$ beer vendors - we waited as long as we could (uhm, noon) until we joined in and then again and again to fight off the heat as we walked from Graca to Pelourinho and back to Barra again for a dip in the ocean. It's been a very long, wonderful, exhausting, hot day and as much as I wish to fall into a deep sleep the world around me is just getting started.
