Grillin in the Park.

Fort Greene Park, June 2011

I cannot remember their names, and they probably don't remember mine, but I was fascinated with their smiles. Sparkling with gold and diamonds in the sunlight, reminiscent of Lil Wayne's mouth of glitter. They are up-and-coming in the music industry, recording under what I recall was a really long name that needed to be shortened to about 3 letters to help my memory (yeah that worked)... but I'm betting this isn't the last time you see their smiles.

Boi de Igatu

A few from the festival in Igatu, it was hard to photograph the actual procession so we sent most of the time photographing the preparation. The festival itself was in celebration of the village women and the elders - especially those that stayed during the hard times after the diamond mine closed. The highlight of the night for me was when the entire procession made it's way to the edge of town, bringing the celebration to a man that can no longer participate due to his health. The smile on his face and being with all of them inside of the small room was amazing. We are just starting the final edit of the workshop - the next images you will see will be the final edit, on a wall, in frames... somewhere tbd.

Lavagem do Bonfim

Today started with us diving out of the taxi and running down the hill to catch up with the Baiana's - 8 photographers running down the hill is a sight to be seen. We then walked the full length of the procession to Igreja do Bonfim, at least 7km in the sun and humidity where no matter how much sun screen I applied I sweat it off in minutes, I am as red as a cooked lobster. I understood the fiesta to be a procession followed by the washing of the steps at the Cathedral, but either I missed the washing or that part didn't happen. It was an amazing day spent with 200,000 others walking through the streets of Salvador ending with the blessings and offerings at Bonfim. Afterwards there was more dancing and eating and we began our second adventure in an old factory now a village for the poor. Those photos will come another time. We head off into the mountains tomorrow and not sure we will have internet, so if you do not hear from me for a week, that is why. until then... enjoy! I've still smiling from this amazing day.

Giglio, 2009

Another day out and about in the sun! I woke up with the idea to nothing today and ended up filling the whole thing with fun. Biking, Giglio, Soul Summit and BBQ - I love summer. Almost every year I've made it to the Giglio Feast of Mount Carmel and am amazed every time - 112 men lifting a 4-ton, 65-foot tower with another 10-15 men on top - spinning, swaying, smiling in the heat of July.

Uaglio! (Boys!)
Aizati i spalli (Lift your shoulders)
Acconge i cosce (Tighten your legs)
Aggiet! (Throw it!)

I love seeing the familiar faces as the years go by, this year I found myself standing next to Danny Aiello. Soon as I realized it was him, all I thought about was Moonstuck (I love that movie!). He looks much younger then IMDB says he is! If you've never gone to the Feast, make a point to go next year. Click here for more Feast pics

Figment Festival 2009

I remembered late in the day, but now that we can get to Governers Island from Brooklyn it was just a quick bike ride and I was there! Yay! Last year only part of the island was open so I was happy to find we could take in the whole island, minus the center of course. Here is a link to all the images. enjoy!
